Triumph was formed in 1885, but it wasn't until 1921 that the firm started building cars. This first generation of the company went bust in 1944, but the assets were bought by the Standard Motor Company. After the war, a new range was launched, starting with the Roadster and Reknown. By the Fifties the marque's scope was focused on sporty saloons and roadster. The 1953 introduction of the TR2 crystalised this thinking, and the TR range would last until 1984. Cars like the Dolomite and 2000 catered for those with an adventurous right foot but who wanted a roof. The Spitfire makes excellent sense as a beginner classic.
